We're mulling over the idea of implementing auto-metadata extraction through 3rd party software to ease the burden of adding meta data and to increase the quality of the metadata added.
Has anyone had experience with any particular software they can overview? And most especially, is anyone using auto-metadata extraction in coordination with Ektron?

If you are planning to dynamically pull metadata for display without store them in the CMS, you can define a "searchable metadata" in CMS to store a reference and apply to CMS content. Upon display that content, use API to get the reference ID and retrieve the metadata from 3rd party and display in the page.

Thank you,
The metadata, though possibly would be displayed, would actually be to increase the quality of the search, allow us to dynamically create search groups (taking search data and creating lists of documents under the available keywords, ie search drilling that is dynamic and keyword based) and to increase the ability to dynamically group/relate documents that contain the same keyword(s).
I believe this means we would need/like to store any auto-extracted metadata within the CMS.
edit:
and in a perfect world, the uploading user would be able to view the auto-extracted meta-data before it was saved with the file in order to have a final approval.

When you say "uploading user", do you mean the content author?
If you want the content author to view the auto-gen metadata before publish the content, you may consider using the Extension. When up on content save, a pop screen can intercept the content and perform the auto-gen, then display the metadata for content author. Once the content author confirms, the auto-gen metadata will be saved with the content into CMS.
Here is the screen cast of Ektron Extension

thanks for reminding me of that screencast.
I actually had it opened in my browser ready to go for an entire day and was too busy to actually take the time to watch it. Then promptly forgot about it
